Characteristics

Climbing or scrambling shrubs, 0.6-9.0 m tall; stems striate, sparsely to densely adpressed-pubescent and gland-dotted, glabrescent, eglandular trichomes spurred. Leaves alternate, petiolate, blade broadly obovate, membranous, 15-60 x 10-45 mm, base cuneate-attenuate and decurrent on the petiole, margins coarsely toothed in distal half or third, teeth mostly 2 or 3 on each side, ± as long as broad, upper surface appressed-puberulous and glabrescent, under surface sparsely pubescent and gland-dotted with hair tufts in axils of veins, eglandular trichomes short-stalked and spurred; petiole 5-18 mm long, appressed-hispidulous. Capitula in terminal corymbs on short peduncles 3-10 mm long, ±5-flowered. Involucre cylindric to obconic, 3-5 mm diam. when pressed; bracts in 4 or 5 series, imbricate, glabrous with obtuse, densely gland-dotted apices, margins ciliate, cartilaginous, green with papery, often darker apices, outer bracts ovate, 0.5-1 x 0.5 mm, inner bracts oblong-elliptic, 5.0-5.5 x 1.0 mm, caducous. Florets mauve to white or creamy-white, corolla 6-7 mm long, gland-dotted, tube funnel-shaped, lobes linear-lanceolate, ±3 mm long. Anthers sagittate with triangular apical appendages. Style up to 6 mm long, pilose distally and on branches, branches 1.5-2.0 mm long. Cypselas narrowly turbinate-cylindric, ±10-ribbed, 2.5-3.0 mm long, appressed-villous on ribs and gland-dotted between ribs; pappus biseriate, outer scales linear, barbellate, 1-2 mm long, caducous, inner bristles barbellate, 5-7 mm long, slightly thickened apically, cream-coloured to pale tawny.
