Characteristics

Erect shrub with closely leafy, rod-like branches, 0.6 to 2.0 m, resprouting from woody rootstock; stem striate, densely felted and gland-dotted, eglandular trichomes T-shaped and medifixed, mostly short-stemmed but interspersed with scattered, long-stemmed and often eccentric trichomes. Leaves alternate, sessile or subsessile, ascending and imbricate, obovate or cuneate to oblanceolate-cuneate, 15-70 x 5-40 mm, base cuneate, margins coarsely serrate or toothed in upper half or third with 2 to 4 teeth ± as long as wide, upper surface sparsely to densely hairy, dark green, under surface loosely to densely woolly-or crisped-felted and gland-dotted, paler green, eglandular trichomes T-shaped and ±medifixed. Capitula in dense, terminal corymbs, ±5-flowered. Involucre shortly cylindric to turbinate, 5 mm diam. when pressed; bracts in 4 or 5 series, imbricate, silky or villous when young, glabrescent but apices ± persistently pubescent and rugose, margins ciliate, leathery and green with darker, papery tips, outer ovate, 0.5-1.0 x 0.5 mm, inner oblong-elliptic, obtuse, 5.0-5.5 x 1.0 mm Florets pale to deep mauve or white to creamy-white, corolla 6-7 mm long, gland-dotted, tube funnel-shaped, lobes linear-lanceolate, 3-5 mm long. Anthers sagittate with triangular apical appendages. Style up to 6 mm long, pilose distally and on branches, branches 1.5-2.0 mm long. Cypselas narrowly turbinate-cylindric, ±10-ribbed, 2.0-2.5 mm long, silky or villous on ribs and gland-dotted between ribs; pappus biseriate, outer scales linear, barbellate, 1-2 mm long, caducous, inner bristles barbellate, 4-6 mm long, slender or barely thickened apically, cream-coloured.
