Characteristics

Scrambling, sparsely branched shrubs, 1.3-1.5 m tall; stems striate, sparsely hairy to glabrous and gland-dotted, eglandular trichomes spurred. Leaves alternate, shortly petiolate, blade broadly ovate, 25-55 x 20-45 mm, papery, rounded to broadly obtuse, abruptly constricted to petiole, margins with ±5 broad teeth in distal three-quarters, apex acute, teeth broader than long, upper surface dark green when dry, glabrous but gland-dotted, under surface sparsely hairy and gland-dotted, somewhat paler, eglandular trichomes spurred; petiole 3-4 mm long. Capitula in terminal corymbs, ±5-flowered. Involucre cylindric, 4-7 mm diam. when pressed; bracts in ±5 series, imbricate, sparsely hairy to glabrous with obtuse, gland-dotted apices, cartilaginous and green with dark, papery apices, outer bracts broadly ovate to rotund, 0.5-3.5 x 1.5 mm, inner oblong-obovate, 2.0-6.0 x 1.5 mm. Florets pale mauve to purple, corolla, ±9.5 mm long, sparsely gland-dotted, tube funnel-shaped, lobes linear-lanceolate, ±4 mm long. Anthers sagittate with triangular apical appendages. Style up to 6 mm long, pilose distally and on branches, branches 1.5-2.0 mm long. Cypselas cylindric, 10-ribbed, ±5 mm long, with numerous short, spreading setulae mostly on ribs and gland-dotted between ribs; pappus biseriate, outer scales, linear, barbellate, 1-2 mm long, inner bristles barbellate, 4-6 mm long, slender.
