Climbing herb, 1.5–12 m long, slightly fleshy and with unpleasant smell.. Leaves ovate or triangular, 2.5–12 cm long, 1.5–8 cm wide, cuneate to truncate or cordate into a petioloid base 1.5–6 cm long, auriculate or not, margins denticulate to dentate or shallowly lobed (lyrate), apex obtuse or acute, puberulous; 3–5-veined from base.. Capitula several to many in terminal corymbs; involucre campanulate, 8–11 mm long; bracts of calyculus linear-lanceolate, 3–5 mm long; phyllaries 10–13, often with darker tips, 8–11 mm long, sparsely pubescent..
