Species

Angiosperms > Asparagales > Orchidaceae > Habenaria

Characteristics

A terrestrial herb 1.5–3.5 dm. high.. Tubers ovoid or ellipsoid, 1–2 cm. long, 0.7–1 cm. in diameter, ± densely tomentose.. Stem erect, slender, with a single basal leaf, and a few scattered sheaths along its length, terete, ± densely pubescent.. Leaf adpressed to the soil, broadly ovate to reniform-orbicular, cordate at the base, apiculate, 1.5–3.5 cm. long and broad, glabrous or with a very few scattered hairs on top, margins densely ciliate; sheaths on stem lanceolate, acute, 0.5–1.5 cm. long, pubescent.. Inflorescence 2–7 cm. long, 2.5–3 cm. in diameter, rather closely 4–11-flowered; rhachis pubescent.. Bracts lanceolate, acute, 5–9 mm. long, pubescent, shorter than the pedicel with ovary.. Flowers erect, but facing outwards, not resupinate the lip being uppermost, pale yellow; pedicel with ovary slightly bent near the apex, 10–12 mm. long.. Intermediate sepal ± at right angles to the ovary, convex, narrowly ovate, rounded, 6–7 mm. long, ± 4 mm. broad; laterals hardly spreading, obliquely oblong-lanceolate, obtuse, 7 mm. long, just over 3 mm. broad; all sepals densely pubescent.. Petals 2-lobed in the apical third, 7–8 mm. long; lobe nearest the intermediate sepal triangular-ovate, rounded, ± 3 mm. long and nearly as broad, the other lobe smaller, linear, 1–2.5 mm. long but only 0.5–1 mm. broad.. Lip bending upwards, 3-lobed in the apical half, ± 8–8.5 mm. long; lobes diverging, rather similar, the middle lobe a little broader than the side lobes, all ± 4 mm. long, the middle one 2 mm. broad.. Spur curved upwards, club-shaped in the apical half or third, ± 1 cm. long.. Anther ± 2.5 mm. high, canals incurved, ± 1 mm. long.. Stigmas stout, much thickened at the apex, nearly 2 mm. long.. Rostellum broadly triangular, obtuse.
More
Lip 8–10 mm long, 3-lobed about halfway, the lobes diverging slightly, the apices rounded; mid-lobe 4–5.5 × 1.5–2 mm; side lobes 3.5–4.5 × 0.6–1 mm; spur 10.5–12 mm long, bent up so that it lies parallel to the flower but above it, slightly swollen towards the end but with an acute apex.
Basal leaf 1, appressed to ground, 2.5–4 × 2.5–3.5 cm, broadly ovate, apiculate, cordate at base, dark green mottled with white, glabrous or with a few scattered hairs on upper surface, ciliate on edge.
Dorsal sepal 6.5–8 × c. 4 mm, ovate, convex, ± at right angles to ovary; lateral sepals of similar length but 2.5–3.5 mm wide, obliquely lanceolate.
Petals 2-lobed in apical third, 7–9 × c. 3.5 mm; posterior lobe (the one nearest intermediate sepal) 3.5 × 2.5–3 mm; anterior lobe 2–2.5 × 1 mm.
Inflorescence 3.5–7.5 × 2–3 cm, fairly densely 3–11-flowered; bracts 6–7 mm long, lanceolate, acuminate.
