Characteristics

A terrestrial herb 1.5–3.5 dm. high, glabrous except for the roots and petals.. Tubers globose to ovoid or ellipsoid, 1–1.5 cm. long, 0.5–1 cm. in diameter.. Stem erect, slender, leafy throughout its length.. Leaves 5–8, the lowermost 1 or 2 reduced to sheaths, the remainder suberect or somewhat spreading, ovate-lanceolate to lanceolate, acute, decreasing in size up the stem, the largest 1.5–3.5 cm. long, 0.4–1 cm. broad, the uppermost similar to the bracts.. Inflorescence 2–14 cm. long, 3.5–5 cm. in diameter, rather loosely 2–9-fiowered.. Bracts lanceolate, acuminate, 1–2.5 cm. long, usually shorter than the pedicel with ovary.. Flowers suberect or curving outwards, green with whitish centre; pedicel with ovary ± curved, 1.5–2.5 cm. long.. Dorsal sepal erect, convex, elliptical, obtuse, 10–13 mm. long, 6–8 mm. broad; laterals spreading, adnate to the column and base of the lip, obliquely lanceolate or lanceolate-elliptical, subacute, 9–12.5 mm. long, 4–6 mm. broad.. Petals erect, bifid in the upper part; basal undivided part ligulate, widened gradually upwards, 5–6 mm. long; posterior (upper) lobe erect, adherent to the dorsal sepal, lanceolate, subacute, 6–8.5 mm. long, ± 3 mm. broad, margins ciliolate; anterior lobe projecting above the dorsal sepal, linear, rather fleshy, 16–21 mm. long, scarcely 1 mm. broad, glabrous.. Lip united in the lower part to the column; free part tripartite from an undivided base 3–5.5 mm. long; middle lobe ± deflexed, linear, 7–10 mm. long, 2 mm. broad; side lobes diverging forwards, narrowly linear, 13–16 mm. long, less than 1 mm. broad.. Spur with base parallel to the ovary, then curved forwards and upwards into a complete loop, the apex projecting backwards, slightly swollen in the apical half, 2–3 cm. long.. Column consisting of a low horseshoe-shaped connective ± 2 mm. high and 7–11 mm. long surrounding the mouth of the spur, the loculi at each end reclinate, 2–3 mm. long, the canals scarcely developed; stigmas porrect, rather stout, widened and truncate at the apex, 3–4 mm. long.
