Characteristics

A terrestrial herb 3–5 dm. high, glabrous except for the roots and petals.. Tubers globose, ± 1 cm. in diameter, densely tomentose.. Stem erect, rather slender, leafy throughout its length.. Leaves 8, the lowermost sometimes reduced to a sheath, the lower 4 or 5 suberect or almost erect, lanceolate-linear, acute, the largest 10–14 cm. long and ± 1 cm. broad, the upper leaves much smaller, adpressed to the stem, lanceolate, acuminate, similar to the lower bracts.. Inflorescence 9–16 cm. long, ± 3.5 cm. in diameter, rather densely 12–24-fiowered.. Bracts lanceolate, acuminate, thin in texture, 1.5–2.5 cm. long, the lower ones longer than the pedicel with ovary.. Flowers suberect or curved outwards; pedicel with ovary curved, ± 2 cm. long.. Dorsal sepal reflexed, narrowly elliptical, obtuse, convex, ± 6 mm. long and 2.5 mm. broad; laterals deflexed, obliquely semi-orbicular, the apex somewhat one-sided, ± 8 mm. long and 4.5 mm. broad.. Petals bipartite nearly to the base; posterior (upper) lobe ± reflexed, linear, ciliolate, 5–6 mm. long, ± 0.5 mm. broad; anterior lobe spreading forwards, elongated lanceolate, curved, acute, 9–10 mm. long, just over 1 mm. broad, glabrous.. Lip deflexed, tripartite nearly to the base; middle lobe linear, obtuse, 10–12 mm. long; side lobes lanceolate-linear, acute, 6.5–8.5 mm. long; all lobes ± 0.5 mm. broad.. Spur parallel to the ovary, swollen in the apical half, ± 2 cm. long.. Anther just over 2 mm. high, loculi reclinate, canals incurved, ± 3 mm. long..
