Characteristics

A terrestrial herb 3–9.5 dm. high, glabrous except for the roots and petals.. Tubers ellipsoid, ± 1 cm. long and 0.75 cm. in diameter, ± tomentose.. Stem erect, rather slender to stout, leafy throughout its length.. Leaves 10–15, the lowermost 1 or 2 reduced to sheaths, the middle 4–6 ± spreading, lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate, acute, the largest 8–15 cm. long, 1.5–4 cm. broad, the upper ones smaller, adpressed to the stem, lanceolate, similar to the bracts.. Inflorescence 10–30 cm. long, 3.5–4.5 cm. in diameter, rather closely 14-to many-flowered.. Bracts lanceolate, acuminate, thin and chaffy, 1.2–2.5 cm. long, the lower ones equalling or longer than the pedicel with ovary.. Flowers suberect or curving outwards, whitish with green sepals, fragrant at night; pedicel with ovary slightly curved, ± 2 cm. long.. Dorsal sepal reflexed, narrowly elliptical, obtuse, convex, 4–6 mm. long, 2–3 mm. broad; laterals deflexed, obliquely semi-orbicular, the apiculum lateral, 5.5–7 mm. long, 3.5–5 mm. broad.. Petals bipartite nearly to the base; posterior (upper) lobe recurved or reflexed, linear, 4–5 mm. long, ± 0.5 mm. broad, ciliolate; anterior lobe spreading forwards, lanceolate, acute or subacute, just over 7 mm. long and ±1.5 mm. broad, glabrous.. Lip deflexed, tripartite nearly to the base; middle lobe linear, obtuse, 7.5–8.5 mm. long; side lobes linear, tapering in the apical part, 6–8 mm. long; all lobes nearly 1 mm. broad.. Spur straight or somewhat incurved, twisted in the middle, the apical half swollen, 13-17 mm. long.. Anther ± 2.5 mm. high, canals porrect, rather stout, ± 1.5 mm. long.. Stigmas porrect, stout with slightly swollen truncate apex, ± 3 mm. long.. Rostellum narrowly triangular, 1–2 mm. long.
