Characteristics

A terrestrial herb 2–5 dm. high, glabrous except for the roots and lip.. Tubers ovoid or ellipsoid, 1.8–2.5 cm. long, 1–1.7 cm. in diameter, ± tomentose.. Stem erect, rather slender, with the leaves spaced out along it.. Leaves 4–6, the lowermost 1–2 reduced to short truncate sheaths, the middle 1 or 2 suberect, with the lower part of the lamina sheathing but somewhat distended, the upper part lanceolate or lanceolate-elliptical, acute, the whole 3–5.5 cm. long, 1–2 cm. broad, the upper 1 or 2 lanceolate, acute, a little smaller, similar to the bracts.. Inflorescence 5–12 cm. long, 3–6.5 cm. in diameter, rather closely 4–11-flowered.. Bracts leafy, broadly lanceolate or almost ovate, acuminate, 1.5–3.5 cm. long, the lower ones longer than the pedicel with ovary.. Flowers suberect, white and green, fragrant; pedicel with ovary somewhat curved, ± 2 cm. long.. Dorsal sepal erect, very convex, ovate or lanceolate, acute, 1.1–1.4 cm. long, 5.5–8 mm. broad; laterals spreading and curved upwards, very obliquely lanceolate, acuminate, 1.3–1.9 cm. long, 7–9 mm. broad.. Petals bipartite nearly to the base; posterior (upper) lobe erect, curved-ligulate, subacute, 9.5–13 mm. long, 1–2 mm. broad; anterior lobe erect, linear or ligulate, 6–11 mm. long, just over 1 mm. broad.. Lip projecting forwards and downwards, tripartite from an undivided base ± 2mm. long; middle lobe oblong-lanceolate, acute, 1.4-2.7 cm. long, 5–7.5 mm. broad; side lobes diverging, oblanceolate, subacute, 10–15 mm. long, 2.5–5.5 mm. broad; all lobes velvety papillose..
