Characteristics

A terrestrial herb 3–9 dm. high, glabrous except for the roots and petals.. Tubers ovoid or ellipsoid, 2–3 cm. long, 1–1.5 cm. in diameter, ± tomentose.. Stem erect, slender to rather stout, leafy throughout its length.. Leaves 10–16, the lowermost 1–3 reduced to sheaths, sometimes whitish with green reticulate veins, the middle 5–7 suberect or ± spreading, linear or lanceolate-linear, acute, the largest 10–20 cm. long and 1–2 cm. broad, the upper ones adpressed to the stem, lanceolate, acuminate, often overlapping, similar to the lower bracts.. Inflorescence 10–24 cm. long, 3.5–5 cm. in diameter, rather densely 10-to many-flowered.. Bracts lanceolate, acuminate, rather thin and scarious, 1–3 cm. long, usually shorter than the pedicel with ovary.. Flowers suberect or curving outwards, green; pedicel with ovary straight or ± curved, 2–3 cm. long.. Dorsal sepal reflexed, narrowly elliptical, obtuse, convex, 5–6 mm. long, 2–3 mm. broad; laterals deflexed, obliquely semi-orbicular or obovate, apiculum to one side, 6–8.5 mm. long, ± 4 mm. broad.. Petals bipartite nearly to the base; posterior (upper) lobe recurved, linear, ciliolate, 4–6.5 mm. long, ± 0.5 mm. broad; anterior lobe decurved and spreading, narrowly lanceolate, acute, 7.5–12 mm. long, ±1.5 mm. broad.. Lip deflexed, tripartite nearly to the base; middle lobe ± incurved, linear, obtuse, 8.5–11.5 mm. long; side lobes lanceolate-linear, tapering towards the apex, nearly as long as the middle lobe; all lobes nearly 1 mm. broad..
