Characteristics

A terrestrial herb 3–8.5 dm. high, glabrous except for the roots.. Tubers ellipsoid or almost globose, 1.5–3 cm. long, ± 2 cm. in diameter, densely tomentose.. Stem erect, rather stout, leafy all along its length.. Leaves 8–14, the lowermost 2–4 sheath-like, the middle ones ± spreading, lanceolate, oblong-lanceolate or oblanceolate, acute, base of lamina broad and ± encircling the stem, the largest 5–14 cm. long, 2–4 cm. broad, the uppermost 1–3 much smaller, lanceolate, very acute, resembling the bracts.. Inflorescence 10–30 cm. long, 3–4 cm. in diameter, rather densely many-flowered.. Bracts narrowly lanceolate, acute or acuminate, the lower ones 1–2.5 cm. long, sometimes overtopping the flowers.. Flowers ± spreading, pale green or yellow-green, sometimes fragrant; pedicel with ovary curved, 11–15(–19) mm. long.. Dorsal sepal erect, broadly ovate, rounded or apiculate, convex, 4.5–7.5 mm. long, 3.5–5.5 mm. broad; laterals deflexed, obliquely lanceolate or semi-ovate, subacute, 5.5–9 mm. long, 2.5–4 mm. broad.. Petals bipartite nearly to the base; posterior (upper) lobe erect, curved, broadly linear or ligulate, 4–8 mm. long, 1–1.5 mm. broad; anterior lobe curved upwards, tapering towards the apex, 6.5–14 mm. long, about half as broad as the posterior.. Lip curved downwards, 3-lobed from an undivided base ± 2 mm. long; middle lobe linear, obtuse, 5.5–10 mm. long, ± 1 mm. broad; side lobes narrowly linear, 7–15 mm. long, half as broad as the middle lobe.. Spur dependent or ± parallel to the ovary, not much thickened in apical part, 10–16 mm. long.. Anther ± 2 mm. high, rounded, canals porrect, ± 0.5 mm. long.. Stigmas ± decurved on to base of lip, narrowly club-shaped, 2–2.5 mm. long.. Rostellum broadly rounded-triangular.
More
Leaves 6–14; ± evenly spread up the stem, the lowermost 2–4 loosely sheathing, the upper ones grading into bracts; those in the middle spreading, the largest 5–14 × 2–4.5 cm, elliptic, oblanceolate or ovate, acute or shortly acuminate, the base enfolding the stem, drying papery.
Lip 3-lobed with an undivided base 1–2 mm long; mid-lobe 5.5–10 × c. 1 mm, linear, obtuse; side lobes 8–14 mm long, c. 0.5 mm wide; spur 7–20 mm long, pendent, slender.
Petals 2-lobed almost to base; upper lobe erect, 4–6.5 × 1–1.5 mm, linear; lower lobe 6–12 mm long, c. 0.5 mm wide, spreading and curving upwards.
Inflorescence 10–30 × 2.5–4 cm, densely many-flowered; bracts 15–30 mm long, usually about equalling or shorter than the flower.
