Characteristics

A terrestrial herb 1.5–3.5 dm. high, glabrous except for the roots.. Tubers ovoid or ellipsoid, 1–2 cm. long, 1–1.5 cm. in diameter, densely tomentose.. Stem erect, rather stout, with a single large leaf at the base and several much smaller sheath-like ones along its length.. Leaf adpressed to the soil, orbicular, ovate-orbicular or reniform-orbicular, obtuse or apiculate, cordate at the base, 2–4.5 cm. long, 2.8–4.5 cm. broad, fleshy; sheaths 3–7, lanceolate, acute, rather loose, up to 2.7 cm. long.. Inflorescence 3–7 cm. long, 3.5–5 cm. in diameter, rather closely 1–5-flowered.. Bracts like the sheaths, leafy, lanceolate, acute, 1.7–2.5 cm. long.. Flowers nearly erect, white; pedicel with ovary 2.5–3 cm. long, the latter with 6 toothed wings.. Dorsal sepal erect, elliptical-lanceolate, obtuse, convex, 11–17 mm. long, ± 6 mm. broad; laterals deflexed, obliquely lanceolate, acute or subacute, ±17.5 mm. long, 6.5–8 mm. broad; all sepals with 1–3 low toothed keels on the outside.. Petals bipartite nearly to the base; posterior (upper) lobe erect, curved, oblanceolate-linear or oblanceolate-ligulate, 13–18 mm. long, 2–3 mm. broad; anterior lobe curved upwards, oblanceolate, sometimes shortly and coarsely toothed at the apex, 14–19 mm. long, 3.5–5 mm. broad..
