Characteristics

A terrestrial herb 3–5 dm. high, glabrous except for the roots.. Tubers ovoid, ellipsoid or nearly globose, ± 2 cm. long and 1–2 cm. in diameter, ± densely tomentose.. Stem erect, rather stout, with a single large leaf at the base and several broad sheath-like ones spaced out along its length.. Basal leaf adpressed to the soil, orbicular-reniform, rounded or apiculate, cordate at the base, fleshy, 3–4.5 cm. long, 3.5–5.5 cm. broad; sheaths 3–6, broadly lanceolate, acute or acuminate, 2–3.5 cm. long.. Inflorescence very short, 2–4 cm. long, 9–11 cm. in diameter, rather closely 3–6-flowered.. Bracts similar to the sheaths, lanceolate, acute, 1.5–3 cm. long, much shorter than the pedicel with ovary.. Flowers suberect or curving upwards, white with a green spur; pedicel with ovary 4.5–7 cm. long, straight or slightly curved.. Dorsal sepal erect, ovate, acute, very convex, 1.3–1.6 cm. long, 8–10 mm. broad; laterals deflexed, very obliquely elliptical-oblanceolate or cuneate, apex lateral, 1.7–2.3 cm. long, ± 1 cm. broad.. Petals bipartite nearly to the base; posterior (upper) lobe erect, adherent to the dorsal sepal, linear, 1.3–1.5 cm. long, 1–1.5 mm. broad; anterior lobe deflexed, linear-filiform, 5–7 cm. long, ± 1 mm. broad near the base.. Lip tripartite from an undivided base 5–6.5 mm. long; middle lobe projecting forwards, narrowly linear, 2–3 cm. long, ± 1 mm. broad; side lobes deflexed, similar to anterior petal lobes, linear-filiform, 5–8 cm. long, 0.5–1 mm. broad.. Spur dependent, narrowly cylindrical, slightly swollen in the apical half, 11–14.5 cm. long.. Anther erect, 8–10 mm. high, canals curved upwards, slender, 1.3–1.5 cm. long, auricles elliptical, ± 2 mm. long.. Stigmas porrect, club-shaped from a narrow base, 1.3–1.7 cm. long.. Rostellum triangular-linear, acute, 6–10 mm. high.
