Species

Angiosperms > Asparagales > Orchidaceae > Habenaria

Characteristics

A terrestrial herb 2.5 dm. to 1 m. high, glabrous except for the roots and petals.. Tubers ellipsoid or nearly globose, 1–2 cm. long, 0.5–1 cm. in diameter, sparsely tomentose.. Stem erect, slender to stout, leafy throughout its length.. Leaves 7–13, the lowermost sometimes reduced to a sheath, the lower 4–7 suberect, linear or lanceolate-linear, acute, the largest 10–28 cm. long and 0.6–2.5 cm. broad, the upper ones much smaller, adpressed to the stem, similar to the lower bracts.. Inflorescence 5–33 cm. long, 3–4.5 cm. in diameter, rather densely 5-to many-flowered.. Bracts lanceolate, acuminate, 7–27 mm. long, usually shorter than the pedicel with ovary.. Flowers spreading at about 45° from the rhachis, pale or yellow-green with white centre, with an unpleasant nocturnal smell; pedicel with ovary nearly straight, 1.5–2 cm. long.. Dorsal sepal reflexed, narrowly elliptical, obtuse, 5–6.5 mm. long, 2–3 mm. broad; laterals deflexed, very broadly and obliquely obovate with the apiculum lateral, 6.5–8.5 mm. long, 4.5–7 mm. broad.. Petals bipartite nearly to the base; posterior (upper) lobe recurved, linear, 4–6.5 mm. long, scarcely 0.5 mm. broad, ciliolate; anterior lobe spreading forwards, narrowly curved-lanceolate, acute, 7–13 mm. long, nearly 2 mm. broad, glabrous.. Lip deflexed, tripartite from an undivided base 2–3 mm. long; middle lobe linear, obtuse, 10–12 mm. long, ± 0.5 mm. broad; side lobes similar but 4.5–6.5 mm. long and not quite as broad as the middle lobe.. Spur ± parallel to the ovary, slightly swollen in the apical half, 1.5–2 cm. long.. Anther 2–3 mm. high, canals slender, porrect with incurved apices, 4.5–6 mm. long.. Stigmas porrect, slender with truncate swollen apex, 3.5–6 mm. long.. Rostellum very narrowly triangular, acute, ± 1.5 mm. long.
More
Lip 3-lobed with an undivided base 2–3 mm long; mid-lobe 8.5–12 mm long; side lobes 6–8 mm long; all lobes linear, c. 0.5 mm wide; spur 10–20 mm long, slender with 1 twist in the middle, not much swollen at apex, ± parallel to pedicel and ovary.
Leaves 6–13, the lowermost sheathing, the next 2–7 suberect, the largest 8–28 × 0.5–2.5 cm, linear or linear-lanceolate, acute, with 3 fairly prominent longitudinal veins; upper leaves becoming bract-like.
Petals 2-lobed almost to base; upper lobes 4–6.5 × c. 0.5 mm, recurved and sometimes crossing, narrowly linear, white, ciliolate; lower lobes pendent, hinged, 7–13 × 1.5–2 mm, lanceolate, acute.
Inflorescence to c. 30 × 3–4 cm, rather laxly to fairly densely several-to many-flowered; bracts 8–20 × 2–3.5 mm, shorter than pedicel and ovary.
Dorsal sepal reflexed, 4.5–6.5 × 2–3 mm, elliptic; lateral sepals deflexed, 6–8.5 × 3.5–7 mm, obliquely obovate, the apiculum lateral.
Anther 2–3 mm high; canals porrect, 4.5–6 mm long, slightly upturned at tips.
Stigmas porrect, 3.5–6 mm long, slender, the tips enlarged and truncate.
Pedicel and ovary 15–28 mm long, semi-erect, slightly upcurved.
Tubers 1–2 × 0.5–1 cm, ± globose or ellipsoid, sparsely hairy.
Flowers green, white in centre, with an unpleasant smell.
Rostellum mid-lobe c. 1.5 mm long, triangular.
