Evergreen bulbous herb, up to 150 mm. Bulb solitary or clustered, ovoidal, more or less exposed above ground, up to 47 mm across, somewhat compressed; outer tunics papery, dark brown; inner tunics fleshy, green when exposed. Leaf mostly solitary except when the new leaf of the current season and the ageing leaf of the previous season overlap for a short period in late autumn; blade recurved, narrowly lanceolate, 70-325 x 25-35 mm, somewhat canaliculate, light green, immaculate, velutinous on both surfaces; margin densely ciliate. Inflorescence adjacent to the adaxial s®rface of the new foliage leaf; scape suberect, 50-190 x 5-7 mm, compressed, lignt green, immaculate, covered wlth white patent hairs, decumbent and elongated in fruit; umbel compact, compressed 15-30 mm wide; spathe valves 4 or 5, erect, closely overlapping for at least half their length, slightly shorter than the flowers, oblong-lanceolate, 25-35 x 5-13 mm, firm but not fleshy, pale green, edged with white proximally, varying from pubescent to smooth abaxially, more or less fringed with retrorse hairs. Flowers 8-19, pure white; pedicels 1-3 mm long; perigone narrowly funnel-shaped, 25-35 mm long, with a narrow tube 10-13 mm long and slighdy spreading lanceolate segments 17-20 x 3-4 mm. Stamens exserted by up to 7 mm; anthers 2.5 mm long and yellow before opening; pollen yellow. Ovary 2-3 mm across, with 1 ovule per locule. Berry spheroidal, 10-15 mm across, orange; seeds fleshy, ovoidal, c. 8 x 10 mm, whitish with a metallic lustre; embryo green.
