Characteristics

Plant 30-100 cm tall. Basal leaves up to 4; lamina flat, rather thick, 1.3-5.2 mm wide, rarely to 6 mm. Inflorescence paniculate, with widely divergent, usually stout branches; flowers usually grouped 2-5 together, at top of and on short branches throughout inflorescence; bracteoles opaque, black in centre, the veins obscure abaxially, the margins sharply differentiated, broad, membranous, white; upper bracteole obtuse to acute, reaching to ⅔-¾ of petals. Flowers 8.5-12 mm long, brownish black. Sepals ¾ or more as long as petals. Stamens equal; anthers versatile, borne at c. middle of petals, usually 3.2-4.4 mm long. Style at anthesis slightly exceeding anthers to slightly exserted from petals, rarely slightly shorter than anther tips.
