Characteristics

Plant 50-150 cm tall. Basal leaves 2-4; lamina terete, compressed or rarely flat, 0.8-1.7 mm diam. Inflorescence paniculate, open; flowers solitary, mainly at top of inflorescence; bracteoles opaque, brownish black in centre, the veins obscure abaxially, the margins not differentiated; upper bracteole acute or obtuse, tip reaching to ¼-½ of perianth. Flowers 8-10 mm long, black or brownish black on sepals, yellowish on petals. Sepals more than ¾ as long as petals. Stamens equal; anthers versatile, borne c. ⅔ up petals, 2-3 mm long. Style at anthesis much shorter than petals, reaching to ⅓ or to top of anthers.
