Characteristics

Marine to estuarine, submerged sometimes intertidal, dioecious, perennial or annual herb. Rhizome fleshy, fragile, 0.2–1 mm diam.; scales 3–5 mm long. Leaves with petiole usually longer than blade, 5–25 mm long; blade oblong to elliptic, 4–12 mm long, 2.5–6 mm wide, entire, obtuse, not membranous, glabrous; cross veins 3–11 pairs, some forked. Spathal bracts 3–5 mm long, lanceolate, enclosing either a male or a female flower. Male flowers with pedicel to 30 mm long; tepals 3–4 mm long; anthers oblong, 2.5 mm long. Female flowers sessile on rhizome nodes; hypanthium 3–6 mm long; tepals less than 1 mm long; ovary ovoid, 1 mm long; styles 3, 8–22 mm long. Fruit globose, 1.5–4 mm in diam. Seeds c. 20, globose, 0.8 × 0.5 mm; testa reticulate.

Creeping stems with internodes 1-3 cm; scales transparent, suborbicular or elliptic, 2-4 mm, membranous; lateral shoots scarcely developed. Leaves 1-paired at each node; petiole 0.5-3.5 cm; leaf blade transparent, narrowly elliptic or ovate, 5-12 × 3-5 mm, entire, with 3-8 pairs of cross veins running from midvein to intramarginal veins and diverging from midvein at an angle of 70-90°. Male spathes ovate or suborbicular, ca. 3 mm, keeled; perianth segments transparent, ca. 2.5 mm.
