Characteristics

Perennial dwarf shrub or shrub, 0.3-1.0 m high. Stems branched, woody. Leaves variable; sessile, blade linear, lanceolate, narrowly ovate or narrowly elliptic-ovate, 10-30 x 1-5 mm, apex rounded, base attenuate, margins distinctly denticulate; glabrous. Flowers: in dense spikes, 30-80 mm long; often with old spike present between over-topping younger ones; bracts ovate, 5-7 mm long, apex long attenuate, membranous margins often contracted abruptly; corolla tube 9-13 mm long, lobes 1.0-1.5 mm long, white, seldom yellow with an orange, red or brownish red fleck; mainly Sep.-Jan. Fruit narrowly oblong, two parts moderately unequal.
