Perennial herb; flowering stems up to 300 mm high, simple, ± decumbent then erect, loosely greyish white-woolly, closely leafy. Leaves in several basal rosettes; blade of basal leaves obovate or oblong-obovate, 30-80 x 10-35 mm, apex subacute, base ± narrowed, clasping, both surfaces densely grey-woolly, ± concolorous; blade of stem leaves similar, narrowly obovate to linear-oblong, smaller upwards, ± appressed. Heads discoid or rarely disciform, broadly campanulate, ± 7-15 mm long, 1-14 crowded at stem tip. Involucral bracts in ± 8-12 series, graded, loosely imbricate, much exceeding florets, radiating, stereome divided; outer glossy white, tipped brown, pure white inwards. Receptacle epaleate, with fimbrils equalling or exceeding ovaries. Flowers 50-335, mostly disc florets, rarely with 2-7 female florets; corolla of disc florets narrowly funnel-shaped, yellow, sometimes purplish; mainly Dec.-Feb. Fruit with cypsela (and ovary) glabrous. Pappus of many bristles, barbellate above, bases cohering by patent cilia.
