Characteristics

Annual or perennial herb, 10–60 cm high, erect, branched from near the base, leafy throughout; stems terete, tomentellous, glabrescent, the lower stems often covered in marcescent leaves.. Leaves aromatic, grey-green, linear to oblanceolate, 2–6(–11) cm long, 0.3–1(–1.4) cm wide, narrowing to a sessile base, sometimes slightly auriculate, margins entire and often undulate, apex acute to apiculate, sparsely tomentose to glabrous above, tomentose beneath.. Capitula 2.5–5 mm long, heterogamous, sessile or shortly stalked, crowded in cymes, these often united in corymbs a few cm in diameter, the whole inflorescence usually on a long leafless stalk, but sometimes only just above the leaves; phyllaries 5–7-seriate, shiny, white or pink, rarely scarlet, the outer smaller than the inner, 1–4.5 mm long, 0.5–2 mm wide, glabrous; receptacle flat, fimbrillate.. Florets white or pale yellow, 5–29; outer florets 2–11, the tube filiform, 2.4–3.3 mm long, the lobes≤1 mm long, style 2.2–3.5 mm long; inner florets 2–18, the tube cylindrical, 2.2–3.8 mm long, lobes 0.3–0.5 mm long and glabrous or sparsely pilose, anthers 1.4–2 mm long, style 2.2–3.5 mm long.. Achenes pale brown, 0.7–1.8 mm long, densely glandular; pappus 2.5–3.5 mm long.
