Perennial herb, tufted; flowering stems up to 200 mm high, terminal, solitary, grey-woolly, leafy. Leaves in several basal rosettes; blade of basal leaves linear, up to 120 x 4 mm, apex acute, base broad, clasping, margins slightly involute, upper surface glabrous, lower surface silvery, silky, woolly felted, striate from strongly raised parallel veins; stem leaves much smaller. Heads discoid, campanulate, 8-10 x 18-20 mm, several clustered at stem apex. Involucral bracts in ± 12 series, loosely imbricate, inner subequal, much exceeding florets, dull, tips acute to acuminate, snow-white, radiating, stereome divided. Receptacle epaleate, shortly honeycombed. Flowers: disc florets only, 51-89; corolla narrowly campanulate above, yellow; Sep.-Jan. Fruit with cypsela hairy. Pappus of many barbellate bristles, bases cohering strongly by patent cilia.
