Dwarf shrub, flowering shoots up to 50 mm high; diffuse, procumbent, mat-forming, main stems bare, gnarled, blackish, producing dwarf side shoots, leafy. Leaves in rosettes; blade of basal leaves obovate, up to 10 x 5 mm; blade of stem leaves subspathulate, conduplicate, ± 6 x 3 mm, imbricate, tips slightly recurved; all silvery sericeous. Heads discoid, campanulate, ± 15 x 20 mm, sessile, solitary at tips of dwarf shoots. Involucral bracts in ± 8 series, graded, closely imbricate, radiating; outer glossy crimson overlaid brown, much shorter and broader than inner; inner much exceeding florets, white streaked crimson particularly at base, opaque, stereome divided. Receptacle epaleate, smooth. Flowers: disc florets only, ± 50-91; corolla campanulate above, yellow; Dec.-Feb. Fruit with cypsela hairy. Pappus of many, scabrid bristles, bases with patent cilia, scarcely cohering.
