Characteristics

Short-lived perennial, woody near the base, or shrub 0.9–2 m high; stems terete, thinly white-tomentose.. Leaves sessile, dull green above, white beneath, lanceolate, 7–21 cm long, 1–6 cm wide (smaller in inflorescence), base tapering and clasping, margins entire, sometimes slightly revolute or seemingly crenate by partial recurving, apex acute and sometimes slightly caudate, thinly pilose to glabrous above, white-tomentose beneath.. Capitula 5–7.5 mm long, heterogamous, many together in lax leafy corymbs to 14 cm across; stalks of individual capitula 2–15 mm long; phyllaries straw-coloured or yellow, lanceolate, 2–5.5 mm long, acute or erose, glabrous or with a hardly pilose stereome; receptacle honeycombed.. Florets greenish yellow, many; outer florets many in several series, tube filiform, 2.5–2.9 mm long, lobes ± 0.2 mm long, style 2.7–3.7 mm long; inner florets several tens but fewer than the outer, tube cylindric, 2.7–3 mm long, lobes 0.2–0.3 mm long, anthers 1.6–1.7 mm long, style 2.9–3.3 mm long.. Achenes cylindric or ellipsoid, 0.5–0.8 mm long, glabrous; pappus white, 2.5–3.5 mm long, falling individually.. Fig. 91 (page 451).
