Mat-forming, perennial herb, many-crowded leaf rosettes from woody well-branched underground stems, flowering stems terminal, solitary, up to 180 mm high, grey-woolly, leafy. Leaves: radical leaves lingulate, up to 35 mm long, apex rounded, both sides closely grey-woolly; cauline leaves narrowly elliptic, tipped with a white membranous bract. Capitula homogamous or heterogamous, campanulate, ± 20 mm long, ± 40 mm in diam., solitary; involucral bracts in ± 7 series, graded, glossy, pink fading to white, crimson blotch inside near base. Flowers 152-180. Flowering time Sept., Oct. Pappus of many bristles, apex barbellate, bases cohering by patent cilia, some fusion also. Cypselae 1.5 mm long, barrel-shaped, hairy.
