Characteristics

Perennial herb to 1.5 m tall; rootstock woody and creeping, slender leafy runners present; flowering stem simple, erect, woody at base, leafy throughout, distally white-or pale yellow-tomentellous; stem winged.. Radical leaves to elliptic, with a long (to 30 cm) pseudopetiole, blade 40–65 cm long including the pseudopetiole, 3.5–6 cm wide, base gradually narrowed but the very base clasping, margins entire or obscurely crenellate, apex acute or obtuse, glabrous and rugose above, white-tomentellous beneath; 3-nerved with the 2 main veins coming off the midrib in the upper quarter of the blade, reticulate; cauline leaves sessile, oblong to lanceolate, to 14 cm long and 1.8 cm wide, tapering at base and decurrent into narrow stem-wings, apex acute, indument as in radical leaves.. Capitula 3–4 mm long, homogamous, arranged in dense clusters which are arranged in large, lax leafy corymbs up to 20 cm in diameter; phyllaries opaque creamy-white or pale green, not radiating, 5–6-seriate, imbricate, the outermost smallest, elliptic, 1.5–3 mm long, rounded or apiculate, stereome glandular and (on outer ones) hairy; receptacle fimbrillate.. Florets 18–25, all hermaphrodite, dull lemon-yellow; tube narrowly infundibuliform, 1.8–2 mm long, lobes 0.4–0.5 mm long, glandular, anthers ± 1.3 mm long, style 2.2–2.5 mm long.. Achenes ellipsoid, ± 0.5 mm long, glabrous; pappus 2–2.6 mm long, white, barbellate.
More
Robust perennial herb up to 1.5 m tall, stock stout, woody, creeping, slender leafy runners as well, flowering stem simple, woody, up to 8 mm diam. at base, herbaceous, upper part thinly white-felted, leafy throughout. Radical leaves up to 600 mm long, half of this petiolar, blade elliptic, up to 60 mm broad, apex acute or subacute, base tapering into the long narrowly winged petiole, expanded below, clasping, upper surface glabrous, finely reticulate, often rugose, lower white-felted, prominently triplinerved, reticulate; cauline leaves oblong-lanceolate, much narrowed to the base, soon linear-lanceolate upwards, acute, base decurrent in long narrow stem wings; indumentum as in radical leaves. Heads homogamous, campanulate, ±4 x 3.5 mm, many in cymose clusters arranged in a large, much branched corymbose panicle. Involucral bracts in 5-6 series, graded, closely imbricate, inner about equalling flowers, not radiating, opaque creamy-white. Receptacle with fimbrils equalling ovaries. Flowers 18-24. Achenes not seen, ovaries glabrous. Pappus bristles many, equalling corolla, scabrid, bases cohering strongly by patent cilia, some light fusion as well.
Perennial herb, up to 1.5 m high; from stout, woody rootstock; flowering stems simple, thinly white-felted in upper part, leafy throughout. Leaves: blade of basal leaves elliptic, up to 600 x ± 60 mm, half of this petiolar, apex acute or subacute, base tapering into long, narrowly winged petiole, base clasping, upper surface glabrous, often rugose, lower surface white-felted, 3-nerved; blade of stem leaves oblong-obovate to linear-elliptic, apex acute, base decurrent in long narrow wings. Heads discoid, campanulate, ± 4 x 3.5 mm, many in cymose clusters, arranged in large, much-branched, corymbose panicle. Involucral bracts in 5 or 6 series, graded, closely imbricate, inner ± equalling florets, opaque creamy white, not radiating, stereome divided. Receptacle epaleate, with fimbrils equalling ovaries. Flowers: disc florets only, 18-24; corolla campanulate above, cream-coloured or yellowish; Feb.-Apr. Fruit with cypsela? (and ovary) glabrous. Pappus of many barbellate bristles, bases cohering strongly by patent cilia, some light fusion as well.
