Characteristics

Perennial herb, up to 20 mm high; densely tufted, mat-forming; main stems diffuse, procumbent, nude, rooting, producing many, erect, closely leafy branchlets. Leaves closely imbricate, appearing rosulate from above; blade linear to very narrowly obovate, up to ± 7 x 2 mm, with a smooth sericeous indumentum that strips off in a sheet, green with a silvery sheen, drying silvery-grey. Heads discoid or rarely disciform, campanulate, ± 10 x ± 18 mm, sessile, solitary at tips of branches. Involucral bracts in ± 7 series, graded, closely imbricate; outer pellucid, palest brown; inner much exceeding florets, white, commonly tinged or tipped rose-pink, opaque, radiating, stereome divided. Receptacle epaleate, smooth. Flowers: female and/or only disc florets 18-24, rarely 1-4 female; corolla of disc florets narrowly funnel-shaped, yellowish?; Sep.-Nov. Fruit with cypsela glabrous or with few hairs. Pappus of many barbellate bristles, bases fused in smooth ring.
