Leaves: upper leaves closely imbricate, appearing rosetted; blade narrowly elliptic or oblong, 5-40 x 1-4 mm, apex subacute to obtuse, both sides with thick, white indumentum, surface silky-smooth, drying like crumpled tissue paper, becoming felty. Heads discoid, campanulate, 5-7 x 8-12 mm, solitary or 2-12 on leafy peduncles, terminal. Involucral bracts in 4-6 series, loosely imbricate, base woolly, sometimes crimson on backs, tips opaque milk-white, acute, radiating, stereome divided. Receptacle epaleate, scarcely honeycombed. Flowers: disc florets only, 20-38; corolla narrowly campanulate above, yellow; Dec., Jan. Fruit with cypsela hairy. Pappus of many scabrid bristles, bases cohering by patent cilia.
