Characteristics

Lower leaves opposite or subopposite, the upper ones alternate, 30–120 x 10–50 mm., lanceolate to oblong-oblanceolate or sometimes rhombic, rough above, densely clothed with minute tubercle-based hairs to subglabrous but shortly bristly on the nerves below, acute to obtuse at apex, cuneate at base and gradually merged into a petiole, membranous to papery, with 5–6 secondary nerves on each side of the midrib.

Erect annual herb up to 65 cm. high, often much smaller; stem often unbranched, sometimes few-branched, rarely branched from near the ground, ± densely clothed with short spreading or slightly retrorse bristles.
Corolla white; tube 2.0–2.5 mm. long, slightly strigose outside, glabrous inside; lobes 0.8–1.5 mm. long, circular to oblong-obovate, rounded at apex, with slightly undulate margins, unequal, spreading.
Fruits c.3.0 x 5.0 x 3.5 mm., much depressed, brown, shining; nutlets connate in pairs, each pair with a wide groove on the back, often strongly asymmetrical by abortion.
Style 0.4–0.5 mm. long, terete, glabrous; sterile appendix 0.4–0.6 mm. long, conical, minutely papillose with a well-marked stigmatic ring at base.
Stamens inserted below the middle of the corolla tube; anthers 0.8–11.2 mm. long, lanceolate, acute, glabrous, often glaucous, subsessile.
Calyx 1.5–2.5 mm. long, with some short and scattered bristles; lobes narrowly triangular to linear-subulate, acute.
Cymes up to 12 cm. long when full expanded, 2, rarely 3 together on each terminal peduncle.
Ovary ovoid, glabrous.
