Characteristics

Straggly or erect herb, sometimes almost climbing, 0.9–2.5 m. tall; stems sparsely to densely spreading hairy and with adpressed pubescence.. Leaf-blades ovate to ovate-lanceolate, 3.5–15 cm. long, 2–10 cm. wide, acute at the apex, gradually narrowed at the base into the petiole, sometimes slightly bullate, ± velvety beneath when very young, later scabrid with ± sparse to dense tubercle-based hairs and many cystolith dots with or without minute hairs arising from them; petioles 1–2 cm. long.. Inflorescences terminal, 2(–3)-branched, each scorpioid cyme 3–18 cm. long; peduncle 8–24 cm. long; flowers with strong ± unpleasant odour.. Calyx divided ± to base, the lobes linear-subulate, up to 6 mm. long, setulose.. Corolla-tube pale green or yellowish towards the base, 4–5 mm. long, slightly contracted about the middle, the upper 2/3 pubescent outside; throat yellow; limb white or greenish cream with a pale green vein extending halfway to outer edge of the lobe, yellow at junction of tube and limb; lobes ± round, obovate-oblong or subreniform, 2.5–3 mm. long, 1–2.5 mm. wide, narrowed at the base, glabrous.. Stamens with anthers ± 2 mm. long affixed at about the middle of the tube; filaments very short.. Style green, 1.25 mm. long with a stigmatose ring at junction with stigmatic cone, the latter 1.25 mm. long, papillate and shortly 4-lobed at the apex.. Nutlets brown, subovoid, 2.5 mm. long and wide, with a distinct asymmetrical groove and an indistinct one, glabrous.. Fig. 16/5, p. 60; 17.
