Characteristics

Plants 150-300 mm high. Corm globose to ovoid, with flattened oblique base, 6-8 mm diam., bearing small cormlets at base; tunics woody, imbricate, splitting from base into sections. Stem simple or 1-or 2-branched from near base or aerial node. Leaves 3 or 4, lower 2 or 3 basal, with well-developed, soft-textured blades reaching to base of spike, plane, (2)3-7 mm wide, sword-shaped to falcate, upper leaf sheathing or unifacial distally, margins and main vein hardly thickened. Spike flexuose, mostly 3-to 7(-9)-flowered; bracts mostly 12-20 mm long, green with transparent margins. Flowers crepuscular, nodding to pendent, white, flushed red to purple outside, sweetly scented; perianth tube ± 10 mm long, cylindric, curved in upper half; tepals ovoid to elliptic, 14-20 x 5–8 mm, spreading to slightly reflexed. Filaments horizontal, 5-6 mm long; anthers 6-8 mm long, decumbent, yellow; pollen yellow. Style branches 7-8 mm long, reaching to upper 1/3 of anthers in closed flower. Capsules ± ovoid-oblong, ± 6 mm long. Seeds light brown, angular. Chromosome number 2n = 26. Flowering time: July to September, or in October in the east of its range and at higher elevations.
