Characteristics

Plants (40-)150-300 mm high. Corm ± ovoid, mostly 7-14 mm diam., asymmetric with oblique base; tunics woody, imbricate, dark brown, regularly notched along lower margin. Stem simple or branched from near base (rarely also from axil of cauline leaf). Leaves 3 or 4 (more if branched), lower 2 or 3 ± basal, blades plane, sword-shaped to falcate, ± 1/3-1/2 as long as stem, 5-10 mm wide, upper leaf cauline, sheathing lower half of stem. Spike slightly flexuose, mostly 2-to 10-flowered; bracts green below, pale and membranous distally, 10-15 mm long. Flowers crepuscular, salver-shaped, white, outer tepals red (rarely glossy brown) outside, sweetly scented; perianth tube straight, ± 6-10(-12) mm long, cylindric, wider near apex; tepals subequal, obovate to elliptic, 12-20 x 4-10 mm, spreading. Filaments weakly diverging, mostly 4-5 mm long; anthers (4.0-)6.5-8.5 mm long, white or pale yellow; pollen white. Style branches 4-8 mm long, ascending, reaching to base or middle (rarely to tips) of anthers in closed flower. Capsules ovoid-ellipsoid, 10-12 mm long. Seeds dark brown, globose to softly angular.
