Characteristics

Plants mostly subacaulescent, 30-80 mm high. Corm ± obovoid, 12-16 mm diam., asymmetric with oblique flat side; tunics woody, imbricate, dark brown, outer layers V-notched on lower margins. Stem rarely emerging more than 20 mm above ground, simple or with one branch from near base, sheathing cataphyll often turning brown above ground. Leaves (2)3, all ± basal, plane, ± falcate, 20-70 x 6-8 mm. Spike 1-or 2(3)-flowered; bracts dimorphic, outer leaf-like, green, 20-30 mm long, inner ± half as long, concealed, membranous. Flowers diurnal, salver-shaped, pink, dark in throat, sometimes dark red at base of tepals, shaded dull red outside, unscented (when dry inner tepals often paler than outer); perianth tube cylindric, 17-24 mm long, occluded below by the style; tepals subequal, obovate-elliptic, 17-25 x 8-11 mm, spreading. Filaments suberect, 3-4 mm long; anthers 4.5-8.0 mm long, held horizontally over tepals, usually red-brown; pollen red-brown. Style branches 10-12 mm long, spreading over tepals. Capsules ellipsoid, 15-20 mm long. Seeds softly angular, dull yellow.
