Characteristics

Plants acaulescent, up to 100 mm high, including flowers. Corm ± bell-shaped flat base, 10-12 mm diam.; tunics of ± woody, overlapping layers, margins bearing short spines. Stem underground, sheathed at base by a pale, membranous cataphyll. Leaves 4 or 5, lanceolate to slightly falcate, 50-100 mm long, margins straight. Spike concealed by leaf sheaths, 1-or 2-flowered; bracts ± membranous, concealed by leaves 17-20 mm long. Flowers diurnal, borne at ground level, salver-shaped, white with large purple blotches at bases of outer tepals, lilac outside; perianth tube straight, cylindric, (15-)30-45 mm long, with thick walls tightly clasping style; tepals subequal, 10-15 x 4-6 mm long, spreading. Filaments diverging, ± 3 mm long; anthers horizontal, 3-5 mm long, yellow; pollen yellow. Style branches ± 12 mm long, laxly spreading. Capsules ovoid-oblong, (10-)15-25 mm long, raised above ground when mature. Seeds angular-prismatic.
