Characteristics

Plants mostly 60-200 mm high. Corm ± obconic, with flat base 8-13 mm wide; tunics of woody, overlapping layers, base with laterally projecting spines. Stem usually unbranched, sheathed by leaves and at base by a membranous cataphyll. Leaves 3(4), straight, ± erect, linear, longest ± as long as stem, mostly 1.5-3.5 mm wide, uppermost leaf largely sheathing, sometimes ± bract-like, reaching nearly to base of spike. Spike (1)2-to 5-flowered; bracts green or often flushed red, 10-20 mm long, outer with margins united around axis at base or for up to 4 mm. Flowers nodding to ± pendent, creamy white, outer tepals red to brown outside; perianth tube 10-12 mm long, curved at or near apex; tepals subequal, narrowly ovate-elliptic, 10-15 x 4-5 mm, slightly reflexed when fully open. Filaments diverging, 4-6 mm long; anthers 4-6 mm long, yellow. Style branches 7-10 mm long, spreading.
