Species

Angiosperms > Dilleniales > Dilleniaceae > Hibbertia

Characteristics

Sprawling to erect shrubs 0.3–0.5 (–0.8) m high, single-stemmed at base. Young stems densely silvery-sericeous with appressed hairs, the indumentum becoming sparser and somewhat cobwebby on older branchlets. Leaves sessile or subsessile, rather erect at first, spreading with age, scattered, elliptic to obovate, (6–) 8–16 (–20) mm long, 4–6 mm wide, the margins flat to (rarely) loosely recurved; adaxial surface silvery appressed-sericeous with simple hairs when young, the hairs usually not completely obscuring the green surface, becoming sparser with age; abaxial surface similar to the adaxial, but the hairs slightly longer and more dense, the surface obscured by the indumentum; apex acute. Flowers single, on short-shoots closely subtended by leaves, sessile. Bracts 2 or 3, brown, scarious, orbicular to broader than long, 3–4 (–5) mm long, sparsely appressed-hairy, apex obtuse-apiculate; primary and secondary bracts similar. Sepals ovate to triangular, 6–8 (–10) mm long, densely appressed silvery silky-villous with longer hairs at the base; midribs not prominent; outer sepals acute; inner sepals similar in size, apex shape and indumentum to the outer, but broader and with broad, scarious margins. Petals 5, yellow, obovate, 8–12 mm long, emarginate. Stamens 30–48, in three groups between the carpels, spreading-erect, free; filaments 1.9–2.3 mm long, not closely appressed to the carpels; anthers rectangular, 1–1.4 mm long, dehiscing by short, terminal slits; staminodes absent. Carpels 3; ovaries compressed-globular, glabrous; styles spreading excentrically from the carpel apex, c. 3 mm long. Ovules 2 per carpel. Seeds (immature only seen) dull brown with a very short basal aril.
