Hibbertia cinerea (r.Br. ex Dc.) Toelken

Species

Angiosperms > Dilleniales > Dilleniaceae > Hibbertia

Characteristics

Erect to spreading shrubs 0.3–1.2 (–2) m high. Young stems densely velutinous or tomentose with erect-spreading and appressed-antrorse fascicled hairs, each with a basal tubercle. Leaves subsessile to shortly petiolate, spreading, elliptic-oblanceolate to narrowly elliptic, (3.2–) 6–10 (–16.3) mm long, (1.5) 2.5–4 (–6.6) mm wide, grey-green, rarely slightly discolourous; margins ± revolute but with the abaxial lamina visible between them and the midrib; adaxial surface densely pubescent to velutinous with spreading fascicled hairs; abaxial surface with indumentum similar to adaxial surface; midrib ± raised abaxially; apex obtuse, rarely truncate or emarginate. Flowers single, ± terminal on branchlets, pedicellate; pedicel 3.5–6 (–7.1) mm long, with indumentum as for the young stems. Bract 1; primary bract subtending calyx, herbaceous, linear to linear-lanceolate, 2.8–5.1 mm long, with indumentum as for leaves; apex acute; secondary bracts absent. Sepals 3−5.3 mm long; abaxial surface grey-green, densely villous to pubescent with erect-spreading and appressed-antrorse fascicled hairs; adaxial surface sparsely tomentose to pubescent with antrorse fascicled hairs towards the apex; outer sepals ovate or rarely lanceolate, acute or shortly acuminate; inner sepals oblong-ovate, rounded, mucronate or emarginate at apex. Petals 5, yellow, broadly obovate, 5.2–12 mm long, emarginate. Stamens 9–12, all on one side of the carpels and curving over and ± obscuring them; filaments ± strap-like, connate up to half their length, c. 1.5 mm long; anthers narrowly obloid, 1.2−1.7 mm long, dehiscing by introrse, longitudinal slits; staminodes absent. Carpels 2; ovaries compressed-globular, densely pubescent; styles curved excentrically from the carpel apex and positioned below the stamens, c. 1.2 mm long. Ovules 2 per carpel. Seeds compressed-globular, c. 2.6 mm long, glossy brown to black; aril membranous, lobed, covering c. two-thirds of the seed.
