Prostrate to decumbent shrubs to 0.5 (–1) m in diameter, rarely ± erect, with short, erect stems to 0.3 m high from the prostrate branches, not or infrequently rooting at the nodes, the stems radiating from a taproot. Young stems moderately to densely greyish-tomentose with short, simple hairs overtopped by sparse, longer pilose hairs. Leaves spreading, scattered or ± clustered at the ends of the erect branches, subsessile, elliptic to obovate, (20–) 30–60 mm long, (10–) 20–30 mm wide; margins usually distantly, shallowly and bluntly toothed in the upper half, flat to slightly recurved; adaxial surface sparsely to moderately pilose with long simple hairs over a moderate pubescence of very short, erect simple hairs, often ± glabrescent; abaxial surface as for adaxial but the hairs often slightly longer; apex obtuse. Flowers single, often clustered in upper leaf axils or terminal, on moderately to densely pilose pedicels 3–30 (–60) mm long (when short ± hidden by the bracts) which elongate somewhat in fruit. Bracts 4–8, subtending the pedicel, dark brown to blackish, scarious, broadly ovate-acute, glabrous to pubescent; primary and secondary bracts similar. Sepals broadly ovate to triangular, 8–15 mm long, often red-tinged, abaxially densely silky-pilose with spreading, whitish hairs to 3 mm long, adaxially glabrous to appressed-pubescent towards the apex; midribs not prominent; outer sepals acute to acuminate; inner sepals similar to the outer in size, shape, apex and indumentum but slightly broader; buds acute to shortly rostrate. Petals 5, yellow, obovate, 10–30 mm long, emarginate. Stamens 50–100, distributed evenly around the gynoecium; filaments free, 2.5–4 mm long, closely appressed to the gynoecium; anthers oblong to rectangular, 1–1.5 mm long, dehiscing by short, introrse, longitudinal slits near the apex; staminodes usually present around the periphery of the stamens. Carpels 5; ovaries compressed, densely pubescent; styles excentrically spreading from near the carpel apex, c. 5 mm long. Ovules 2 per carpel. Seeds yellowish-brown, globular, c. 2.5 mm in diameter, with a short aril at the base.
