Hibbertia ovata Steud.

Species

Angiosperms > Dilleniales > Dilleniaceae > Hibbertia

Characteristics

Erect to spreading shrubs 0.2–0.5 (–0.75) m high, single-stemmed at the base. Young stems with sparse, pilose, simple hairs over a shorter, moderately dense pubescence. Leaves sessile, spreading, scattered, elliptic to obovate (rarely narrowly so), (10–) 20–30 mm long, (3–) 5–10 (–16) mm wide; margins usually with a few short, blunt teeth towards the apex, narrowly recurved; adaxial surface sparsely pilose with spreading hairs over a moderately dense pubescence of short erect simple hairs, the lamina surface clearly visible beneath the indumentum; abaxial surface as for abaxial but often more densely pilose; apex obtuse. Flowers single, axillary in upper leaf axils, sessile or on a very short, densely pubescent pedicel to 1 mm long, hidden by the bracts. Bracts 4–6, dark brown to blackish, scarious, broadly ovate, acute to apiculate, 3–6 mm long, glabrous (the lowermost sometimes minutely pubescent); primary and secondary bracts similar. Sepals ovate to triangular, 5–7 mm long, abaxially moderately to densely minutely silvery appressed-pubescent, with long, white pilose hairs usually restricted to the margins in the lower half (rarely spread across the lower half), adaxially sparsely to moderately finely appressed-pubescent towards the apex or in the upper half;  midribs not prominent; outer sepals acute to acuminate; inner sepals similar to the outer in size, shape, apex and indumentum but broader; buds acute. Petals 5, yellow, obovate, 10–15 mm long, emarginate. Stamens (36–) 40–60 (–82), arranged evenly around the carpels; filaments free, 1.5–2.5 mm long, closely appressed to the carpels; anthers oblong to rectangular, 1–1.5 mm long, dehiscing by short, introrse, longitudinal slits near the apex; staminodes and reduced stamens usually present. Carpels 3 (–5); ovaries globular, densely pubescent; styles excentrically spreading-erect from near the carpel apex, 2.5–3 mm long. Ovules 2 per carpel. Seeds dark reddish-brown, globular, c. 2.5 mm in diameter, with a short, lacerate aril at the base.
