Species

Angiosperms > Dilleniales > Dilleniaceae > Hibbertia

Characteristics

Erect shrubs (0.4–) 0.6–1.2 (–1.8) m high, single-stemmed at base. Young stems moderately to densely pubescent with ± appressed to antrorse pale simple hairs. Leaves sessile, scattered, elliptic to obovate, (25–) 30–70 (–85) mm long, (7–) 10–30 (–35) mm wide (leaves on flowering shoots often substantially smaller than those on main stems); margins of larger leaves usually distinctly crenate to serrate for most of their length (rarely entire), flat; adaxial surface finely appressed-pubescent with sparse ± straight to curved simple hairs; abaxial surface similar to the adaxial; apex acute. Flowers single, axillary in upper leaf axils and terminating shoots, sessile. Bracts 2–4, brown, scarious, broadly ovate, 1–2 mm long, glabrous to sparsely pubescent, apex apiculate to acuminate; primary and secondary bracts similar. Sepals ovate, 6–8 mm long, abaxially sparsely to moderately appressed-to spreading-pubescent, adaxially shortly pubescent at least towards the apex; midribs not prominent; outer sepals acuminate; inner sepals similar to the outer but broader and with a broad, scarious, ± glabrous margin; buds rostrate. Petals 5, yellow, broadly obovate, 7–14 mm long, emarginate. Stamens (15–) 20–30 (–45), distributed around the gynoecium with gaps at the carpels; filaments free, 1.9–2.5 mm long, not closely appressed to the carpels; anthers oblong, 1.1–1.5 mm long, dehiscing by short introrse slits at the apex; staminodes absent. Carpels (2) 3; ovaries globular, glabrous; styles excentrically spreading-erect from near the carpel apex, 2–2.5 mm long. Ovules 2 per carpel. Seeds globular, c. 2 mm in diameter, pale reddish-brown, with a thin membranous lacerate aril covering the basal one-third.
