Characteristics

Leaf-lamina up to 9–10 × 7–8 cm., suborbicular or very broadly elliptic to elliptic in outline, shallowly to deeply 3–5-lobed, stellate-setose on both surfaces, apex acute, margin irregularly dentate or serrate, base obtuse to truncate; petiole up to 5 cm. long, fulvous-stellate-setose; stipules 6–8 mm. long, filiform.

Flowers up to 5 cm. in diam., pink or white, solitary, axillary or in short axillary 2–5-flowered racemes often clustered at the apices of the stems; peduncle up to 3·5 cm. long, densely fulvous-setose, articulated near the apex.
Petals 3–4·5 × 2·5 cm., obovate, stellate-setulose and stellate-pubescent outside except where overlapping, nearly glabrous inside.
Epicalyx of up to c. 20 bracts, often exceeding the calyx; bracts up to 16 mm. long, filiform or very narrowly linear.
Small tree up to 7 m. tall, or shrub; stems densely fulvous-stellate-tomentose, sometimes viscid.
Calyx c. 15 mm. long, densely setose; lobes lanceolate, usually joined to about half-way.
Staminal tube 16 mm. long; free parts of filaments 1 mm. long.
Seeds 2·5 × 2·5 mm., angular-subreniform, minutely lepidote.
Capsule 13 × 12 mm., subglobose, setose.
