Shrub, 0.8-2.4 m high; stems densely fuscous stellate-hispid, underlying tomentum of shorter stellate hairs. Leaves narrowly ovate to suborbicular, apex rounded, margins serrate, base obtuse, 5-nerved, brownish or tawny tomentose. Flowers in leafy, corymbose panicles, congested towards tips of branches; peduncles up to 60 mm long, articulated near apex. Epicalyx of 10-12 filiform bracts. Calyx with lobes narrowly lanceolate, fuscous-hispid. Petals narrowly obovate, white (very rarely slightly yellowish). Staminal tube 8-12 mm long; filaments ± 0.5 mm long, anthers orange. Flowering time early spring. Fruit a subglobose capsule. Seeds with white or brownish silky floss.
Leaf-lamina 2–7 × 1–5 cm., narrowly ovate to suborbicular, sometimes slightly lobed, brownish-or tawny-tomentose, apex rounded to acute, margin rather bluntly to sharply serrate, base obtuse rounded or nearly truncate usually 5-nerved; petiole 2–33 mm. long; stipules up to 10 mm. long, filiform.
Flowers 1·5–3 cm. in diam., white or yellowish with orange anthers, congested towards the tips of the branches, forming leafy somewhat corymbose panicles; peduncles up to 6 cm. long, hairy like the stems, articulated near the apex.
Calyx up to 22 mm.; lobes 6–20 × 3–-6 mm., narrowly lanceolate, acute, fuscous-hispid especially on the midrib and near the margins, shortly connate at the base.
