Characteristics

Leaf-lamina up to 10 (15) × 7 (12) cm., lanceolate to suborbicular in outline, rarely not lobed, usually 3–5-lobed, palmatifid or palmatisect, central lobe or segment usually much the longest, tomentose and setose on both surfaces, apex acute, margin crenate to serrate, base cordate; petiole up to 10 cm. long; stipules up to 10 mm. long, filiform to narrowly linear.

Flowers up to 8 cm. in diam., yellow with dark purple or red centre, solitary, axillary, forming terminal racemes by reduction of the upper leaves; peduncle up to 3 cm., long, tomentose, articulated from near the middle to almost at the base.
Calyx up to 15 mm. long, tomentose and setulose outside, appressed-pilose within; lobes ovate to triangular, joined at the base for 5–7 mm.
Erect perennial herb up to 1·5 m. tall; stems tomentose, sparsely setose and often somewhat glandular.
Petals up to 4 × 3·5 cm., obliquely obovate, tomentose outside where not overlapped, glabrous inside.
Capsule up to 10 mm. in diam., broadly ellipsoid to subglobose, tomentose.
