Calyx 15–22 mm. long, usually slightly exceeding the epicalyx; lobes up to 20 × 6 mm., ovate-lanceolate, acute, slightly acuminate, stellate-setose, stellate-setulose or stellate-hispid especially on the margins, slightly joined at the base.
Flowers up to 8 cm. in diam., purple, solitary, axillary; peduncle up to 6 cm. long, stellate-setose or stellate-hispid, articulated 5–10 mm. below the apex.
Epicalyx of 7–8 bracts; bracts up to 18 × 2 mm., linear, acute, sparsely stellate-setulose.
Petals up to 5 × 3 cm., narrowly obovate to obovate, glabrous or nearly so.
Perennial herb 6–24 cm. tall, with woody rootstock; stems stellate-setose.
Staminal tube 10–12 mm. long; free parts of filaments 1–2 mm. long.
Capsule 10–12 × 10 mm., subglobose, sparsely setose.
Seeds 3 × 2 mm., subreniform, tomentellous.
Style-branches 4 mm. long.
