Characteristics

Shrub to 2 m high. Branchlets with fine stellate hairs (0.1–0.4 mm long), aculei (0.7–1.2 mm long) and glandular hairs. Stipules caducous, 10–14 mm long,  linear. Climax leaves: petiole 30–95 (–120) mm long, indumentum similar or dissimilar to the branchlet, aculei usually present on the petiole, stellate hairs often sparse or in a longitudinal band on adaxial surface; lamina broadly ovate or circular or depressed-ovate, usually unlobed (sometimes up to 7-lobed, the lobes shorter than wide), 50–90 mm long, 50–130 mm wide, truncate to cordate base, serrate to minutely and distantly serrulate margin, acute, obtuse or acuminate apex, concolorous to discolorous, indumentum denser on abaxial surface, the midrib and primary vein indumentum dissimilar to the interveinal regions, sparse stellate hairs on major veins and very sparse on minor (0.1–0.25 mm long), aculei scattered on major veins, sparse on the minor (0.25–1.2 mm long), and glandular hairs. Distal leaves reduced in size, narrowly elliptic, obovate or rhombic. Foliar nectary at lamina base, 4–7 (–12) mm long. Flowers solitary in the leaf axils, not pedunculate; pedicel 7–9 mm long at anthesis, 12–18 mm long in mature fruit, with aculei; epicalyx with aculei, 9–12-segmented, the segments connate at the base, straight, subulate, 3-veined, 0.5–0.6 times the length of the calyx, 8–14 mm long; calyx at anthesis 16–22 mm long, with aculei, stellate hairs sparse or absent, calyx nectaries absent; petals 60–70 mm long, pink with proximal region reddish; staminal column c. 20 mm long, stamens distributed throughout its length, the filaments c. 1 mm long; style exserted 6 mm beyond the apex of the staminal column, branches c. 1 mm long, stigmas capitate, stigma hairs 0.1 mm long. Capsule ovoid,16–19 mm long, densely hairy, the hairs appressed, beak 2–4 mm long. Seed angular-reniform, c. 5 mm long, striate and minutely pectinate-pubescent.
