Leaf-lamina 10(18) × 8(18) cm., usually suborbicular in outline, sometimes varying to narrowly oblong, stellate-pubescent on both surfaces, not lobed or shallowly 3–5-palmatilobed, lobes acute to rounded, sinuses shallow rounded, margin irregularly serrate, base rounded to truncate or slightly cordate 5–7-nerved, midrib with a longitudinal fissure 2–3 mm. long near the base; petiole 4–7 (18) cm. long, hairy like the young stems; stipules up to 8 mm. long, linear to filiform.

Erect annual herb up to 2 m. tall with irritant hairs; stems with short, sometimes sparse, usually stellate prickles with a swollen base, and one or more longitudinal lines of crisped pubescence or pile.
Annual herb, up to 2 m high. Bracts of epicalyx forked. Stipules narrow, linear to filiform, not amplexicaul. Peduncle up to 8 mm long. Flowers yellow to orange with purple or maroon centre.
Flowers deep yellow, somewhat veined, rather small for the genus (about 3/4 in. long); fl. and fr. May 1857 (seeds slightly and sparingly papillose).
Calyx up to 2 cm. long, 10-nerved, pilose, becoming scarious; lobes lanceolate, acuminate, setose or aculeolate on the margins.
Flowers up to 7 cm. in diam., yellow to orange with purple or maroon centre, solitary, axillary; peduncle 4·8 mm. long, hispid.
Capsule up to 15 × 10 mm., ovoid-acuminate, densely appressed-setose.
Staminal tube 15 mm. long; free parts of filaments 0·5–1 mm. long.
Epicalyx of 9–10 bracts; bracts 8 × 0·8 mm., linear, forked.
Petals 3–5 × 2–3 cm., almost glabrous.
