Leaf-lamina 5–14 × 2–10 cm., papyraceous, narrowly ovate to broadly ovate (rarely suborbicular), rarely obscurely 3-lobed, stellate-pubescent above, greyish-tomentose beneath, apex acute to rounded sometimes slightly acuminate sometimes mucronate, margin subentire to crenate or serrate, base rounded to cordate 3–7-nerved; petiole up to 8 cm. long, greyish-tomentellous or nearly glabrous; stipules 4–10 mm. long, subulate with expanded base.

Flowers up to c. 7 cm. in diam., yellow with dark reddish centre, solitary in the axils of the upper leaves and forming short terminal racemes at the ends of the branches; peduncle up to 2 cm. long, greyish-pubescent, 5-angled at the apex, articulated near the base.
Epicalyx of 5 bracts, tomentellous; bracts 15–35 mm. long, very variable in shape as in H. calyphyllus and, while less obviously broadened towards the middle, usually clearly if slightly narrowed towards the base, sometimes with long caudate tips.
Shrub, up to 2 m high. Leaves discolorous, greyish tomentose below. Epicalyx of 5 bracts, variously shaped but usually broadened near middle and narrowed to base. Calyx lobes ovate-acute. Flowersyellow with dark reddish centre.
Calyx up to 20 mm. long, accrescent, pubescent; lobes ovate-acute, joined for up to 5–6 mm. at the base.
Petals up to 6 × 5 cm., obovate, pubescent outside except where overlapping, glabrous within.
Staminal tube 12–18 mm. long ; free parts of filaments up to 3 mm. long.
Capsule 2·5 × 2 cm., broadly ovoid, stellate-setulose; valves acute.
Shrub up to 2 m. tall; branches glabrous to greyish-pubescent.
Seeds 5 × 5 mm., reniform, silky-tomentose.
