Species

Angiosperms > Malvales > Malvaceae > Hibiscus

Characteristics

Shrub 1–2.5 m high. Branchlets with stellate hairs (fine and sparse to scattered), aculei (0.3–1 mm long) and glandular hairs. Stipules caducous, linear to subulate, 0.75–1.5 mm long. Mature leaves: petiole 10–20 (–70) mm long, indumentum dissimilar to that of branchlet (lacking aculei, stellate hairs denser on the petiole, a longitudinal band of stellate hairs on the adaxial surface conspicuous); lamina ovate or broadly ovate or subcircular, unlobed to shallowly 3-lobed (lobes shorter than wide), 50–70 mm long, 40–75 (–100) mm wide, cuneate to shallowly cordate base, subentire to obscurely serrate margin, acute to obtuse apex, concolorous, indumentum similar on both surfaces with the midrib and primary vein indumentum similar to that of the interveinal regions, with stellate hairs (scattered to moderately dense, fine (sometimes with some poorly differentiated coarser hairs) and glandular hairs, aculei present or absent. Foliar nectary present, at lamina base or on petiole, 6–13 mm long. Distal leaves sometimes reduced in size, broadly ovate to broadly elliptic. Flowers solitary in the leaf axils, not pedunculate; pedicel in the youngest buds ascending, becoming reflexed, at anthesis at a right angle to the plant axis and in fruit erect, 23–35 (–45) mm long, with stellate hairs and aculei (sometimes nearly glabrous); epicalyx with stellate hairs, 9–11-segmented, straight, subulate to broadly subulate, (1–) 3-veined, 0.1–0.3 times the length of the calyx, 2–5 mm long; calyx at anthesis 17–23 mm long, the indumentum yellowish, with stellate hairs (moderately to very dense) and sparse aculei, calyx nectaries present (slit-like, 1.5–2.5 mm long, with straw-coloured pink or red to purplish pigmentation around each nectary); petals 55–75 mm long, pale pink with the proximal region reddish; staminal column 18–22 mm long, stamens distributed throughout its length, filaments 2 mm long; style exserted 5–6 mm beyond the apex of the staminal column, the branches 2 mm long, stigmas capitate, stigmatic hairs 0.2–0.3 mm long. Capsule ovoid, 16–22 mm long, densely hairy, beak 1–3 mm long. Seed angular-reniform, c. 5 mm long, striate and minutely pectinate-pubescent.
