Characteristics

Leaf-lamina 2–13 × 0·8–3 cm., oblong or oblong-elliptic to very narrowly oblong, sparsely to fairly densely stellate-setose, apex acute or rounded, margin rather distantly serrate, base cuneate to rounded usually 3-nerved; petiole 1–14 mm. long; stipules 2–4 mm. long, acicular.

Flowers 2·5–4 cm. in diam., red, solitary, axillary and often forming terminal racemes or panicles by reduction of the upper leaves; peduncle up to 5 cm. long, stellate-hispid, rather inconspicuously articulated usually near the middle.
Calyx up to 8 mm. long, stellate-hispid outside, glabrous inside; lobes 3–6 × 1·5–3 mm., lanceolate to triangular, slightly connate or joined nearly to half-way.
Perennial herb 5 cm.-l m. tall, producing annual shoots from a woody root-stock; sterns stellate-setose or stellate-setulose.
Style projecting up to 10 mm. beyond the staminal tube, branches 3·5–4·5 mm. long.
Staminal tube 6–8 mm. long; free parts of filaments 1·5–4 mm. long.
Epicalyx of 6–7 bracts; bracts 1–4 mm. long, linear to subulate.
Capsule 8–10 × 10–12 mm., subglobose, usually densely pubescent.
