Hibiscus riceae Craven, F.D.Wilson & Fryxell

Species

Angiosperms > Malvales > Malvaceae > Hibiscus

Characteristics

Shrub 2–6 m high. Branchlets with stellate hairs (fine hairs very dense, 0.05–0.1 mm long, coarse hairs sparse to scattered 0.1–1.3 mm long), aculei (with densely and finely stellate-hairy tubercles, 0.5–3 mm long), and glandular hairs, rarely the coarse stellate hairs and aculei very sparse. Stipules at length caducous, subulate to narrowly triangular, 3.5–10 mm long. Mature leaves: petiole 60–180 mm long, indumentum dissimilar to that of the branchlet (aculei usually absent on petiole, coarse stellate hairs often dense but sometimes sparse); lamina circular, broadly elliptic or broadly ovate, unlobed to shallowly 5-lobed (rarely 5–7-lobed, lobes as long as wide), 95–200 mm long, 85–260 mm wide, cordate or sometimes cuneate base, serrate to subentire margin (and then minutely serrulate and often repand), acute, obtuse or acuminate apex, usually strongly discolorous, abaxial surface indumentum dense, midrib and primary vein indumentum dissimilar to the interveinal regions (the coarse stellate hairs denser on major veins, rarely the coarse stellate hairs sparse and the indumentum then more or less uniform), with stellate hairs (dense fine and coarse), glandular hairs and sometimes with aculei (0.75–2 mm long). Foliar nectary present (rarely absent) at lamina base, 3–15 (–25) mm long. Distal leaves reduced in size, narrowly ovate or ovate. Flowers solitary in leaf axils or sympodial in few-to several-flowered terminal and/or distal-axillary racemoid axes, not pedunculate; pedicel 10–21 mm long, with stellate hairs and aculei; epicalyx with stellate hairs and aculei present or absent, 9–11-segmented; segments free at the base, incurved, linear, obscurely 1-veined, 0.9–1.1 times the length of the calyx, 18–30 mm long; calyx at anthesis 19–24 mm long, the indumentum whitish, with stellate hairs (moderate to dense) and aculei, nectaries absent; petals 50–75 mm long, pink with proximal region reddish; staminal column 21–26 mm long, stamens distributed throughout its length, filaments 1–2 mm long; style exserted 4–7 mm beyond the apex staminal column, branches 2 mm long, stigmas capitate, stigma hairs 0.1–0.5 mm long. Capsule ovoid, 14–18 mm long, densely hairy, beak 1–2 mm long. Seed angular-reniform, 3–4 mm long, striate and minutely pectinate-pubescent.
